Exotic BasicsExotic hardwood flooring offers exciting design options for literally any taste. Rich natural colors and distinctive graining provide characteristics that are unique to each species. Mix and match. The options are limited only by your imagination. Legendary hardness is common among exotic hardwoods. Many species are up to three times harder than domestic Red Oak. Add BR-111s though aluminum oxide finish and these floors are rated to withstand the most demanding applications. A litany of color is often represented within one exotic species, creating a beautiful overall mosaic. Most species are finished natural, without stains, resulting in consistent color and grain throughout the thickness of each plank. Refinishing immediately restores the hardwoods original natural beauty. Some exotics are also photosensitive, darkening over time with exposure to light. The process enhances the natural hues and stabilizes approximately three months after installation.

Solid Wood Flooring vs. Engineered Wood FlooringSolid hardwood flooring, as the names suggests, is solid wood of the same species throughout the thickness of each plank. Engineered hardwood flooring, in comparison, includes a wear layer of the species glued to a plywood backing. The wear layer of engineered products can differ in overall thickness and the cut of the veneer. BR-111™ 5/16” Engineered has a sliced veneer wear layer of approximately 1/20”. Dolomites and Triangulo® Engineered products feature a thick-sawn wear layer approximately 1/8”. Sliced veneer and thick sawn wear layers provides a natural hardwood flooring presentation. A rotary cut veneer, on the other hand, gives a repetitive pattern to wood flooring. Because of the veneering process, engineered flooring from BR-111™ provides the appearance of a solid wood floor when installed. BR-111™ 5/16” Engineered cannot be re-sanded. It can, however, be screened and re-coated. The Dolomites Engineered and Triangulo® Engineered products can be re-sanded approximately two times, due to their 1/8” wear layers. Engineered hardwood flooring is constructed with an odd number of cross-grained plywood veneers that offer 8 – 16 times more dimensional stability than solid wood flooring. In areas of uncontrolled environments, such as beach houses where the owners like to turn off their air conditioning units and let the natural breeze into their home, an engineered hardwood flooring product may be a better choice than a solid hardwood, particularly thinner solids like the BR-111™ 5/16” x 3 1/8”. Thin solids, because of their size, are particularly prone to dimensional change in uncontrolled environments that experience extreme humidity swings. Thin solids are better suited to controlled environments of 35-55% humidity. Relative humidity (RH) is responsible for adding and subtracting moisture from an environment. The RH, coupled to a much lesser degree with the temperature, controls the amount of moisture in an area. High RH means high moisture. Wood flooring will absorb the moisture and expand. Low RH means the wood will lose moisture and shrink. BR-111 Environmental PledgeBR-111™ is firmly committed to preserving Brazil’s rain forest and renewing its natural resources. Strictly monitored by the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Natural Resources (IBAMA), BR-111™ promotes sustainable forest practices, securing timber that is selectively harvested and inspected under government guidelines. Coupled with a stringent policy of reforestation, rational harvesting from sustainable forests assures the health and continuity of this most valuable resource. BR-111™ manufacturers hardwood flooring only from timber that is selectively harvested under the principles of sustainable forest management. Each tree is assessed for age and condition. Older trees, often susceptible to disease, are removed first, assuring that valuable resources are not left to waste away on the forest floor. After timber is harvested, multiple trees are replanted fostering sustainable forest practices and completing the reforestation process. In the final analysis, the process of selective timber harvesting produces the highest quality lumber, allowing immature trees in the upper-story to benefit from increased sunlight and water. And because of the tropical climate, reforestation in Brazil’s rain forest occurs substantially faster than in temperate climates of North America. | 2,160 | Janka Hardness Rating ComparisonBelow is a hardness comparison between Indusparquet® flooring and several common domestic species. All data is provided by the U.S. Forestry Lab, per the official Janka Hardness system. Janka Hardness represents the pounds of pressure required to embed a 0.444" diameter steel ball one half of its diameter into the wood. *All BR-111™ 5/16" Engineered products feature a cross grained construction that results in a Janka Hardness Rating equal to that of Northern Red Oak. Color VariationRich natural colors and distinctive graining provide characteristics unique to each species. A litany of color may be represented within one exotic species, creating a beautiful mosaic and adding to the character of the hardwood flooring.
Exotic hardwood flooring is a natural product. Many exotic species have a wide range of color and grain variation. As a result, no two planks are exactly the same, even within the same species.
When choosing your exotic hardwood floors, compare product samples to room scene photography. This simple comparison will help you visualize the full range of colors available within each species. PhotosensitivityPhotosensitive species will darken with exposure to light, enhancing the natural beauty of the exotic species. As your exotic hardwood flooring matures, the species will develop an enhanced and rich depth of color that is superior to the initial out of the box installation. The color of each photosensitive species will stabilize 3-12 months after installation. Photosensitive Species | -- Amendoim -- Angico -- Bavarian Cherry -- Beaujolais Cherry -- Brazilian Cherry | -- Chianti Cherry -- Roman Magnolia -- Tiete Rosewood -- Tigerwood -- Victorian Padouk | During the first year after installation, move or rotate area rugs when cleaning to help darken floors evenly throughout your home. Over time, lighter unexposed areas will blend in with darker areas and a consistent color will be achieved within the entire room.
